Mood Trackers: The Simple Tool You Didn’t Know You Needed

Mood Trackers: The Simple Tool You Didn’t Know You Needed

Ashley Ayers

What are mood trackers?

Mood trackers are simple yet meaningful tools that help you keep yourself in check and see how your mood changes over time.

By taking just a moment each day to reflect on how you’re feeling, you can begin to notice patterns in your mood and learn more about what makes you feel your best. Whether you’re going through a tough time or just want to understand your emotions better, mood tracking can help bring more awareness and peace into your life.

How to use mood trackers:

These mood trackers are designed to be flexible, so you can pick the format that works best for you—whether you like tracking your mood daily, weekly, monthly, or even for the whole year!  And yes, you can use them all!

  1. Daily Mood Tracker:

Each day, you can take a few moments to log your mood in the morning (AM), afternoon (MID), and evening (PM).
Using a color key is a fun and easy way to represent how you’re feeling—like yellow for happy or blue for a calmer mood.
Plus, there’s space to write about the highlights of your day, any lessons learned, and something you’re excited about. This gentle reflection can be a lovely way to end your day on a positive note.

  2. Weekly Mood Tracker:

Over the course of the week, you can check in on how you’ve felt each day, tracking those AM, MID, and PM moments. This can help you see how your emotions flow throughout the week.  It’s all about noticing patterns and understanding yourself better.

  3. Monthly Mood Tracker:

This tracker lets you log your mood each day of the month, giving you a bigger picture of your emotional journey.  I like to do these after a daily reflection, that way I can really look at the moods I've tracked over the course of the day and narrow it down to one general feeling to log for the day on the monthly tracker.  Setting a goal for the month (like prioritizing self-care or reducing stress) helps you stay focused, and by the end of the month, you can look back and see how you’ve grown.

  4. Yearly Mood Tracker:

If you love to look at the big picture, the yearly mood tracker is a wonderful way to track your emotional ups and downs throughout the whole year. It’s perfect for spotting seasonal patterns or just appreciating how far you’ve come over time.
This tracker, along with the monthly tracker are more for a visual reference whereas the daily and weekly trackers are more about processing your emotions and observing yourself.

How Mood Trackers Can Help with Anxiety:

If you’re dealing with anxiety, mood tracking can be a great way to support yourself. It allows you to take small, mindful steps each day toward understanding your mental health.  Self-awareness is huge when it comes to being able to manage your anxiety.

  1. Spotting Patterns:

By regularly tracking your mood, you may start to see patterns that you hadn’t noticed before. Maybe your anxiety tends to flare up in the afternoons, or perhaps certain situations seem to trigger feelings of stress. Recognizing these patterns is a powerful step toward managing those feelings with more ease.

  2. Early Awareness:

Mood trackers can also help you spot when things start to shift. If you notice a string of tough days, you can take action early, whether that’s scheduling some extra rest, engaging in self-care, or reaching out to a friend or professional for support. It’s a way of being kind to yourself, knowing when you might need a little extra care.
Intentionally recognizing my own patterns was the key to finally gaining control over my own schizoaffective episodes.

  3. Sharing with a Professional:

If you’re working with a therapist or doctor, your mood tracker can be a valuable tool to share with them. It gives you a clear record of how you’ve been feeling, which can make it easier to explain what’s been going on and how you’ve been coping.

Mood trackers are perfect if you are super busy!

If you’re someone who struggles to find time to journal, mood tracking might be just what you need!

It doesn’t require a lot of time or writing. Just create your color key of emotions ahead of time (you only have to do this once).  Then, simply color in a box and write a few words, if you like.

It is a super quick and manageable way to stay connected to your emotions. Even on your busiest days, you’ll be able to reflect on how you’re feeling without feeling overwhelmed by the process.
